Minimalist Fall Decor Ideas

If you follow me on Instagram, you already know I start decorating for fall in like...August. And this year was no exception! But I have a secret: I don’t have any permanent fall decor that I have to store all winter, spring or summer long. That’s because I utilize both living (and therefore dying, once the season is over) items as well as decor I already have, that can easily fit in no matter the season.

One of the best ways to decorate for the holidays as a “minimalist” is by avoiding items that need to be stored and of course, keeping things relatively simple. To celebrate the start of October, I’m sharing some of my favorite minimalist fall decor ideas, including some things I’ve implemented and others I’ve seen others do so well.

Neutral Pumpkins

What is fall decor without pumpkins? Each September, we go to the farmers’ market down the road and pick out a trunk-load of white, pastel orange, light blue and other neutral pumpkins. We always place them on our front porch and on either side of our living room fireplace.

Fall Candles

The smell of your home is just as important as the look of it. And you know I like candles — especially during the colder months. I love the fall scents from Golden Slipper and Paddywax!

Dried Corn Husks

This year, we picked up three dried corn husks and placed them around the fireplace as well. Most pumpkin patches have corn in a variety of colors, like maroon, light yellow or even multicolored ones.

Pine Cones

Pine cones are my go-to for both fall and winter, and it’s the only thing I do store in a Ziploc bag during the warmer months so I don’t have to gather (or let’s be honest — buy) them each year. I got a bag of fall-scented pine cones last year and they still smell good this year! I put them in a tall, wide clear glass vase on our kitchen counter and in a geometric glass container on our coffee table.

Fall-Colored Vases + Other Decor

Add some subtle fall colors to your permanent decor, like vases, vintage books, figurines, etc. We have several pieces of decor that work well with all seasons, including a burnt orange vase I picked up at Goodwill that I put some fall flowers in.

Grass + Wheat

Last year, I picked up a small bunch of wheat from Hobby Lobby and put it in a vase next to the fireplace. This year, I got a pampas grass bundle from my friend’s store here in Nashville (The Golden Slipper) and put it in the same vase. The best news is pampas grass will work all year long.

Branches + Wood Accents

Another natural item that extends from fall into winter is branches and other wood accents, like tree trunk slices you can place on your dining room table as a centerpiece or use as coasters. Not to mention, you might be able to get branches from your backyard — for free, too!

Fall Flowers

Pick up a bouquet of seasonal flowers the next time you’re getting groceries. Brighten up your space with shades of yellow, orange, maroon, or even just a bundle of moody dark greenery. This is a great way to keep your space looking fresh and new on a weekly or biweekly basis! PS I like to get one bouquet (usually the cheap $5 “filler” ones) and split them between two or three vases to spread the love throughout our house.

Happy Fall!

I hope this inspires you to deck out your space with natural, found items. And let me know about your favorite minimalist fall decor ideas!
